New Employment Legislation

Date: 18th June 2013

With the Employment Relations Amendment Bill having passed its first reading in Parliament (6 June 2013), the Hon Simon Bridges, Minister of Labour, has announced that the Government is looking to ensure that employers have the freedom to compete and expand, while key protections for employees are maintained.

…”fairness, flexibility and clarity in employment law…. improve workplace arrangements to lift productivity and create jobs.”

The 3 points that we believe will be of most interest to NZ SME employers are:

· The extension of flexible working arrangements so any employee, not just caregivers, can ask for flexible work.

· Faster Employment Relations Authority processes (decisions from Grievance cases etc.)

· Greater clarity as to what confidential information employers are required to provide to affected workers in situations such as dismissal or redundancy. (This will be really helpful, we think it’s a bit vague currently)
