Topics covered

The seminar starts with an update on ACC from their representative. Next you will hear from the Chief Executive of Worksafe New Zealand (Gordon MacDonald) about the wins to date, the challenges ahead and how as an organisation you have the capacity to positively affect ‘health and safety’ within your organisation.

Geraint Bermingham, the Chair of the New Zealand Society for Risk Management will also share with you the benefits of risk management as it applies to your business, the causal factors and the legal requirements.

The session concludes with a panel discussion and question and answer session.

About the Speakers

Gordon MacDonald, Chief Executive WorkSafe New Zealand

Gordon has 35 years’ experience in health and safety in the United Kingdom. He joined the UK’s Health and Safety Executive in 1978, ultimately rising to be Acting Deputy Chief Executive before accepting the top job at WorkSafe NZ.

During his career with HSE, Gordon worked in a wide range of operational and policy areas. He helped develop major hazards legislation to implement European Union Directives, led strategic and research functions in the nuclear industry, managed regional teams of inspectors, and led the Hazardous Industries Division regulating the offshore oil industry and the onshore chemicals and petrochemicals industries. Gordon joined WorkSafe NZ in March 2014.

Geraint Bermingham, CPEng, MIPENZ

Geraint has a passion for managing risk in high-risk environments and in particular the practical application of theory. Originally a Royal Navy officer serving on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, specific risk management roles have included membership of the risk management committee of Europe’s largest industrial site, Manager Operational Risk and Manager Risk and Compliance within internal audit at Air New Zealand and working as the Safety Officer for the Dutch salvors, Svitzer BV, during the Rena recovery operation. He is a long-standing member of national and international risk management standards committees.
